"SAWDUST"--AT LAST!

That was the Variety headline that announced the arrival of Rose's first nightclub, commonly called the Backstage Club but referred to in the March 25, 1925, article as The Stage Door.

Variety was excited because Rose's place was an informal hangout and not "of the glitter and crass kind with high coveur charge among other higher charges" that were everywhere in Broadway district.

Its address was 110 West 56 Street, one flight above the street, and that's where Rose first met future wife Fanny Brice, the legendary comedienne, who visited the club to hear the singer Helen Morgan.
